Study Task 05 - Design Principles - Canon

A canon is a set of design rules that you should always follow when designing and laying out a publication.

1) USE A GRID It creates a structured page, which leads to the aesthetic layout of the piece working well.

Why are they used?

  • Creates Consistency
  • Creates Structure

Why are they important?

  • They can create a consistent layout in a publication allowing reader to draw parallels with other parts of the publication

Drawbacks?

  • Doesn't allow you to have a free flowing / impacting layout if you want to create tension/drama.

Usage?

  • Print Media / Editorial Designs

2) USE THE CORECT ALIGNMENT Flush left is the most appropriate as we read from left to right and there are no rivers created. Justified can be used; however, only if the text has been typeset correctly to ensure that there are no rivers.

Why is it important?

  • Creates unity and consistency between pictures/ blocks of text
  • Links different elements of a page together
  • Allows text to flow
  • increases readability

Drawbacks?

  • Centre alignment can reduce readability and make everything look like a menu.

Usage

  • Print media / Editorial Design

03) USE WHITE SPACE

What is it used for?
  • Breaks up a page
  • Allows Text to Breathe
  • Reduces Overcrowding
  • Helpful for complicated publications to break up information
  • Creates Drama / Emphasises points of interest
  • Can be used subtly or for impact
  • Amount needed depends on context

Drawbacks?

  • Can be overused

TYPOGRAPHY RULES

1) Keep Line Lengths Short - A 66-character line (counting both letters and spaces) is widely regarded as ideal and anything from 45 to 75 characters is satisfactory.

2) Have a consistent set of fonts- 2-3 fonts maximum.

3) Never over-stretch type
