Study Task 04 - Design Principles - Figure / Ground

NME

NME is a free magazine that contains a lot of adverts and very little white space. The information is packed in tightly to save space and it is very busy and hard to focus on one particular figure. This creates a fast paced reading experience so you can skim/take in a lot of information while on the go.
On most pages the writing is the 'figure' and the images are used as the grounds. The paper is very thin, poor quality to presumably save money and publication/postage costs.

JUXTAPOS

Juxtapos use a thick, shiny coated stock for their front cover and a thinner paper for the inside pages. There is a lot of white space to create interest and draw attention to images and writing on the page, creating a slower more laid back read allowing you to digest the information in the magazine.

NEST

Nest uses a thicker, matte stock for it's publication and a lot of white space to draw attention to specific images and words. The images / text is the figure and the ground is usually plain black or white.
