OUGD603 - Brief 04 - Pump n Grind - Logo Refresh

For the refresh of the logo and the new range of packaging the team at Pump n Grind wanted to create a rubber stamp that could be stamped onto paper bags in which the roasted coffee beans would be packaged. This would save production costs in the long run and allow them to sell more bags of coffee easily.

Jeff wanted the current logo to remain a bear but be a bit more updated. This is an example of their previous branding and logo.

Jeff then sent a few examples of branding that he liked in a range of different styles to give me an idea of the new look he was after:

I worked alongside Marnie, a third year illustrator to design the new logo of the bear. Marnie's illutration is on the left. As the design was being made into a stamp I had to go over the lines to make them thicker, so they would look more effective when stamped.

Creating a typeface I tried to take inspiration from the range of images Jeff had sent to me that he liked. The typeface I made i handdrawn and tried to exude a laidback and playful yet energetic nature.

The type and image I felt worked really well together and both Jeff and the customers really seemed to like the new design!

To go with the new paper bags I also had to redesign their current range of taste cards. These were the previous designs which would now look too complicated and colourful alongside the new design, not to mention they were in a completely different style. Jeff said he didn't want an illustration on the new batch of cards, just the name and relevant information.

The new cards continue the hand drawn theme with 2 different fonts featuring a hand drawn marker pen effect. I wanted to keep the design simple as I didn't want the cards to appear more high end than the bags so opted for a simpler, stripped back layout.

Overall Jeff was really pleased with both designs and they were a big success at a recent coffee expo down in London where the pump n grind team were meeting different suppliers.
