OUGD406 - Studio Brief 01 - Personal Practice - Secret 7

Brief - 'Design a 7" record sleeve for one of the following 7 artists:

Chvrches - Clearest Blue
Etta James - At Last
Jack Garrett - Worry
The Jam - Art School
John Lennon - Imagine
Max Richter - Dream 3
Tame Impala - The Less I Know the Better

You should aim to visually explore the artists and tracks, through the context of the secret 7 competition. You are competing against 1000's of submission from all over the world, how can your design/designs stand out. What are the obvious responses? How can knowledge of these inform your own visual investigation. 100 designs for each track will be selected, pressed and printed to be exhibited at Sonos Studios in Shoreditch / London and sold for £50 to raise money for the Amnesty International. Creatives from around the world are invited to interpret the tracks in their own style for every 7”'.

Direction: In response to this brief I have decided to focus on Tame Impala and Jack Garrett's tracks as they are two of my favourite artists therefore I feel the most passionate about creating a design that could be used for these tracks. I also already feel very familiar with the atmosphere and tone of these two tracks. Although some believe it would be more appropriate to pick a track you wouldn't usually listen to as it creates a blank canvas, I am already familiar with all of the songs on the list, therefore choosing the ones I felt most strongly about I thought was the most appropriate step.

Before starting to sketch out initial ideas for each track there were a few aims I wanted to meet in response to the brief:

  • Create an eye-catching design using minimal colours, simplistic lines and a minimal composition
  • Create a hand rendered design using either illustration scanned in, print or collage.
  • Gather feedback and submit the most popular designs.
