OUGD603 - Brief 01 - Fate App - Visual Identity Development

A muted white and charcoal grey colour palette inspired by the interiors of contemporary art galleries was used across the app’s interface. Using a paired back colour scheme not only creates a modern, clean and minimal user interface but also prevents the variety of art featured in the app from clashing with its colour scheme. The increased contrast between the background and text also helped with the legibility at a small scale.

Icons are simplified and used only where necessary, featured on the navigation bar (Location, Favourites and Search) and the filter section to select the type of events available (exhibitions and galleries, talks and design conferences or workshops).

To enhance the clean, minimalist aesthetic of the design a geometric sans serif typeface is used for the main copy including headings and titles in 2 different weights - medium and bold. Always over 14 px point size to ensure legibility on the scale a phone screen.

In ‘Favourites’ Georgia Italic is used to highlight the type of event you have selected eg. ‘workshop’ to increase the legibility and hierarchy of the information.

The logotype was inspired by 2017/18s current influx of German typography and Blackletter trend to stand out against all the other apps on the market which predominantly use flat, bold geometric fonts in their logos. The font ‘Editor’ was slightly manipulated to create the logo.

The images of artist work used in the prototype of the app were chosen to compliment the colour scheme of the design and display it to its full potential.
