Study Task 01 - Design Principles - Colour Theory

We were set the task of choosing 2 pantone colour swatches in either gloss or matte to feature on the cover of 4 various books from different genres.

The first genre was Thriller. We chose a dark, bloody red colour for the main dominant colour as it is reminiscent of blood and gore, yet is more subtle than a bright crimson red, creating ambiguity and mystery, what thrillers tend to be related to. The second, less conformist colour we chose was a charcoal grey. Not as harsh as black, it too represents mystery through darkness and is also quite murky, cold and uninviting.

The second genre we looked at was 'chic lit'. We went for a hot pink colour as the dominant choice and a duck egg blue as it's complimentary colour. The pink is typically seen as very girly and has connotations of romance, flowers and love.  The blue is a lot more calming and serene. Both colours work well together and can be found on the cover of many books in the chic lit genre.

The third genre we looked at was 'Western'. We wanted to go with colours reminiscent of sandy deserts, rocky tundra and dry tumble weeds, so went for a mainly orange and brown colour palette choosing two similar colour swatches. They both work well together or on their own and can be seen on many pre existing book covers for 'Western' novels.

The final genre we looked at was humour. We wanted to choose happy, bright colours so opted for a sunny yellow for the dominant colour and a brilliant blue for the second complimentary colour. Both swatches work well together creating an energetic, playful vibe, yet also both work as stand alone colours as you can see in the examples below.
