Study Task 1: Developing Initial Sketches

To carry on our development from our initial sketches we started playing around in Photoshop and Illustrator, exploring different ways in which we could incorporate different shapes colours and imagery into our logotype to communicate the brands identity.

3 different variations, inspired by central heating pipes. The pipe runs through both words 'linking' them together, using both boiler related imagery and a play on words. These colours are reminiscent of the ones already used by the brand on the websites page so we tried to incorporate them somehow. Eventually, after much debate we decided against using the orange bracket above the 'e', as it looked a bit too cluttered, however we did decide to use many of the aspects in this design in the final outcome.

This was another great developmental design created by Ste using links again to create visual interest in the logotype. I like the one with the flame above the i as it reminds me of a bunsen burner and is relevant to boilers and central heating. I'm not really a fan of the colour palette here as it is a bit bright and garish however I like the overall design. The link between the i + n also looks like a chain link which I think we could have looked into further if we had a later deadline.

These are another strong set of designs following the same idea of linking the letters, however this was incorporated neatly in to a circular logo which I think is a creative spin and adds a further element of interest.

I liked the design of this helpline logotype as it again played on the idea of linking letters together with pipes but focussed more on the negative space created by the lines, rather than just merging individual letter forms into one another.

In the end this is the logotype we decided to base the final design on, however it still needed to be tweaked and improved upon in some areas. We played around with a variety of different colour combinations and experimented with moving the 'bracket' into different places before deciding to remove it completely. We also tried moving the slogan 'the boiler people' into different positions, but decided it worked best where it was as it was easy to read and balanced the composition.

We then tried placing the logotype onto the actual help-link website however being on a white background we soon realised it looked lost and needed something to anchor it into place. This is when we decided on the concept to make the background blue and change the writing to white and play on the negative space. We also tried breaking the 'pipe' up to create the illusion of a dot above the i and a hidden link between the space above the i+n.

In the end this was our final design (next to the original help-link logo). We colour matched it to the colours on the website and played around with the kerning and tracking of the letters until we were completely happy with both the type in the logo and the slogan.

This is how it looks on the website:
